That little clock tucked away next to your System Tray not grabbing your attention enough? Then try Speaking Clock. This month's featured utility not only allows you to display the time -it'll even announce it out loud! You can add your own message, display the date, and set up alarm calls that launch an application program or issue a custom message when they're activated.

Speaking Clock also has a number of add-on facilities that extend its capabilities. These will be most useful if you have children. They include a stopwatch, a speaking calculator, a speaking typewriter that reads out anything you type in, a multiplication table exercise and a few games.

When you install Speaking Clock, the program displays a character called Max. Max greets you according to the time of day for example, "Good morning, Friend!" Then the time is displayed, and a second character called Check reminds you that you can "Right-click on the clock for more options".

The screen clears to show just the clock and one character. When you switch screens, the clock hides itself. However, you can hear the time by double-clicking Max. You'll also get an announcement every ten minutes.

Right-click the clock icon in the System Tray, as suggested, to see what options are available. You can choose one of the add-on options, or select Settings. Here, you can alter the frequency and type of announcements, or change the clock's appearance.

The Clock Options tab lets you set how often you want an announcement. You can also opt for a whispered (or no) announcement at some times of day -handy if you don't want to be kept awake at night! The option to set the clock using the Internet is especially useful that way, it'll always show the right time. Select the Characters tab (Fig e) to choose a character, adjust its size or the volume of the announcements. This panel also allows you to choose to display a processor usage bar. This shows overall usage of the system, and provides a useful insight into which actions on your PC are processor-intensive. Select the Skins option to change the appearance of the clock, a preview shows you how it'll look.

Need a wake-up call? Then select Speaking Clock's Alarms option. This allows you to set the time, enter the announcement text and specify which application to launch for each of up to 999 alarms.
Click Type and Speak to display a text box, into which you can enter text. Click one of the Voice Style buttons before you enter the text you want to be spoken in that voice, as the voice control is added to the end of the current text string. Select Timer to try the stopwatch, or click Add-ons to try the table exercise, calculator or game.
